Best of East Hampton

For those with an appreciation for history and architecture East Hamptons historic downtown area is a true treasure trove with preserved buildings from the 19th centuries awaiting exploration. Stroll, along Main Street to admire the colonial style houses, quaint shops and historical landmarks that adorn this area.
Here are a couple of things we love doing around town;

1. Air Line State Park Trail

The Air Line, also known as the New York New Haven and Hartford Railroad was known for its viaducts that maintained a level track on its journey, from New York to Boston. Opening in 1873 parts of the Air Line became disused over time the stretch from East Hampton to the Connecticut Massachusetts border, which transformed into a pathway. Today the southern 25 mile section of this trail running from East Hampton to Windham is recognized as a National Recreation Trail. It offers an experience for both walkers and cyclists with its stone dust surface and historic trestles dating back to the century. Along the way you'll come across structures like the Rapallo and Lyman viaducts with benches strategically placed for resting.

2. Salmon River State Forest

One part of the Air Line Trail leads you through the tranquil settings of Salmon River State Forest where you can engage in activities such, as hiking fly fishing, mountain biking or simply relaxing with a picnic surrounded by natures tranquility. Today the Salmon River flows calmly yet back in the century its shores were bustling with mills. In North Westchester factories competed fiercely for waterpower leading grist mills to operate at night while paper mills ran during the day. The park boasts the Blue Blazed Salmon River Trail offering visitors a glimpse into history that we'll explore further.

3. Comstock Covered Bridge

The surviving covered bridge in Eastern Connecticut gracefully spans the Salmon River within the state forest. Dating back to 1840 this historic bridge is now only open to pedestrians following a ban on traffic in the 1930s. A memorable incident occurred a decade earlier when a truck mistakenly drove through its flooring. Subsequently a restoration project was initiated during the Great Depression by the Civilian Conservation Corps providing employment opportunities while preserving this link. Featuring a pitched roof the main section of the bridge protects beams from weather conditions to prevent deterioration.

4. Hurd State Park

In East Hampton lies a section of the Connecticut River inviting you for a walk, along its banks and to enjoy a peaceful family picnic. At this spot the river widens to more than 200 meters. During the summer season visitors arriving at Hurd State Park by boat are greeted with a campground specifically designed for boaters. Encompassing over 1,000 acres, the park offers a network of trails that wind through its forests. By following the pathways you can reach the summit of Split Rock, where clusters of granite boulders provide views of the river as it meanders through the trees.

5. Lake Pocotopaug

Lake Pocotopaug is situated near the village that shares its name in East Hampton and spans over 500 acres. Many homes around Lake Pocotopaug are occupied year round with some serving as vacation rentals or second residences leading to an increase in population during the summer months. Sears Park lies on its perimeter and features a beach; however recent occurrences of blue green algae have rendered swimming not advisable. Access to this beach is restricted to residents and their guests. For those traveling from afar one scenic way to appreciate the lake is via Lake Drive, which curves along the shores offering views of Twin Islands and Scraggy Island on the water.
